ปัจจุบันตลาดอาหารเสริมและวิตามินเพื่อสุขภาพได้ขยายตัวตามความตื่นตัวในการดูแลรักษาสุขภาพของผู้บริโภค แต่เราจะแน่ใจในคุณภาพของวิตามินนั้นได้อย่างไรว่ามีประสิทธิภาพ (Effectiveness) จริงตามที่อ้าง
ประเภทของวิตามินและอาหารเสริม
วิตามินหรืออาหารเสริมในท้องตลาดแบ่งได้ 2 ประเภท คือ
Food Grade คือ ใช้เกณฑ์ในการควบคุมคุณภาพเช่นเดียวกับอาหาร
Pharmaceutical Grade / Medical Grade คือ ใช้เกณฑ์ในการควบคุมคุณภาพเดียวกับยารักษาโรค
วิตามินเกรดอาหาร
วิตามินเกรดอาหาร (Food Grade Vitamins) เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ที่พบได้ง่ายตามท้องตลาดทั่วไป กระบวนการผลิตของวิตามินเกรดนี้ไม่จำเป็นต้องผ่านการควบคุมของสำนักงานอาหารและยา (Food and Drug Administration) และไม่จำเป็นต้องบอกส่วนผสมทั้งหมดที่มีในผลิตภัณฑ์นั้น ๆ ทำให้มีโอกาสการปนเปื้อนจากสารเคมีอื่น ๆ (Chemical Contamination) อยู่มาก เช่น โลหะหนัก (Heavy Metals) สีผสมอาหาร (Food Coloring) แป้ง น้ำตาลบางชนิด หรือสารเคมีอื่น ๆ ที่สำคัญคือผู้บริโภคอาจจะไม่ทราบเลยถึงการมีสารปนเปื้อน เนื่องจากข้อกำหนดของอาหารนั้นไม่จำเป็นต้องระบุส่วนประกอบทั้งหมดในฉลาก อีกทั้งในส่วนคุณภาพวัตถุดิบ (Raw Material) ของวิตามินเกรดอาหารนั้นไม่มีการกำหนดอย่างชัดเจน
ดังนั้นสารอาหารที่ได้รับอาจไม่ตรงตามที่ระบุไว้ในฉลาก (Discrepancy) เช่น วิตามินซีเกรดอาหาร (Food Grade Vitamin C) 500 มิลลิกรัม เมื่อเรารับประทานเข้าไปแล้ว ร่างกายอาจได้รับวิตามินซีในปริมาณที่ไม่ถึง 500 มิลลิกรัม หรือร่างกายอาจไม่สามารถดูดซึมเลย และถ่ายออกมาเป็นวิตามินซีในรูปแบบเดิม อีกทั้งยังเสี่ยงกับการได้รับสารเคมีอื่น ๆ ซึ่งอาจจะก่อให้เกิดผลเสียกับสุขภาพอีกด้วย
วิตามินเกรดยา
วิตามินเกรดยา (Pharmaceutical Grade or Medical Grade Vitamin) ใช้กระบวนการการผลิตจะมีการควบคุมคุณภาพที่มากกว่า (Higher Quality Control) โดยจะต้องมีการกำหนดมาตรฐานคุณภาพแหล่งที่มาของวิตามินชนิดนั้น ต้องไม่มีสารปนเปื้อน (No Chemical Contamination) คุณภาพของวิตามินที่ร่างกายได้รับ การดูดซึมและออกฤทธิ์จะต้องได้มาตรฐานเช่นเดียวกับการผลิตยา (High Bio – Availability) ปริมาณวิตามินที่ระบุในฉลากนั้นต้องครบถ้วน ถูกต้อง และเชื่อถือได้ (Reliability)
เรียกได้ว่าวิตามินเกรดนี้มีคุณภาพและประสิทธิภาพมากกว่าเกรดอาหารอย่างมาก แต่วิตามินเกรดนี้อาจจะหาได้ยากตามท้องตลาด อีกทั้งราคาสูงกว่าชนิดอื่น หากวิตามินนั้นมีคุณภาพเป็นเกรดยาก็จะมีการระบุไว้ในฉลากสินค้า
ดังนั้นการอ่านและศึกษาข้อมูลของวิตามินก่อนตัดสินใจซื้อจึงมีความสำคัญมากกับผู้บริโภค การเลือกซื้อวิตามินจึงไม่อาจตัดสินกันที่ราคาเพียงอย่างเดียว ควรพิจารณาถึงคุณภาพ (Quality) และประสิทธิภาพที่เชื่อถือได้ วิตามินที่ถูกจัดว่าแพงที่สุดคือ วิตามินที่ไม่ได้ก่อให้เกิดผลดีกับสุขภาพ ร่างกายดูดซึมไม่ได้ (Poor Absorption) หรือได้ของแถมเป็นสารพิษอีก (Heavy Metal Toxicity) เพราะนอกจากจะต้องเสียเงินในการซื้อหามารับประทานแล้ว ยังต้องจ่ายเพิ่มในส่วนของสุขภาพที่เสียไปอีกด้วย
